Social Control
Social control is the right and duty of citizens to participate, individually or through their organizations, social networks, and institutions, in the oversight of public management and its results, in accordance with applicable regulations and the correct use of public resources and assets. The expanded concept is provided by articles 60, 61, and 63 of Law 1757 of 2015.
Citizen oversight is understood as the democratic mechanism of representation that allows citizens or different community organizations to exercise vigilance over public management, administrative, political, judicial, electoral, legislative authorities, and control bodies, as well as public or private entities, non-governmental organizations of national or international character that operate in the country and that are in charge of the execution of a program, project, contract or the provision of a public service.
For more information on how oversight bodies work, see Law 850 of 2003.
